Japan donates over USD 1.4 million to Maldives through UNDP

Japan has donated USD 1.4 million as a grant aid package to help the Maldives gear up towards COVID-19 recovery.

The grant aid package from Japan is aimed at assisting the Maldives overcome the present challenges in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant aid package will benefit the government and entrepreneurs, as it looks forward to opening up the economy post-lockdown.

The aid package will also enable greater investments to address and diversify the economic base, while exploring new avenues of entrepreneurship, and contributing to the overall objective of stimulating economic growth in the long-term. The funding was secured by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives.

Japan continues to be an important bilateral development partner of the Maldives. Discussions are ongoing between the two governments for a project to assist the Maldives to increase the capacities of health service providers in the country to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
