China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited (CSCEC) has handed over the accommodation facility constructed for expatriate workers in the Maldives.
The facility, which was built in Hulhumale' following a request from the government of the Maldives, was completed on May 18 and handed over to Housing Development Corporation (HDC). Ambassador of China to the Maldives Zhang Lizhong stated 200 employees from CSCEC worked to construct the facility that cost USD 280,000. The facility can accommodate a maximum of 800 individuals and is equipped with a mess room for 175 people along with a toilet block for 84 people.
The government has been transferring expatriates living in congested labour quarters in Male' City to containment facilities to mitigate community spread of COVID-19. The Maldives has recorded over 1,100 COVID-19 cases, of which more than half are expatriates living in congested labour quarters in the capital city.
