The national flag carrier, Maldivian, has revealed it has carried 61 tonnes of supplies on its cargo freighters to the Maldives during the past week.
The airline operated five flights to Thailand, Sri Lanka and India to bring food and medical supplies. The flights are arranged to ease freight of cargo to the Maldives when many countries have suspended travel and movement amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The flight to Bangkok, Thailand carried 21 tonnes to the Maldives and 15 tonnes were brought from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, 8 and 16 tonnes of goods were bought from the two cities of India, Chennai and Trivandrum, respectively.
Maldivian began cargo freight operations on March 29 to ensure food and medical supplies are brought to the country during the lockdown announced in most of the countries following the COVID-19 pandemic. Maldivian expects to increase the number of flights considering the demand for charters from businesses to bring cargo.
