37,000 sacks of staples sent to atolls: NEOC

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated 37,000 sacks of staples have been sent to the atolls in the past 24 hours as part of the efforts to ensure enough supplies are available in all the islands of the country.

Speaking at the daily press briefing held at the NEOC, Spokesperson NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said the stocks transported to the atolls include 17,000 sacks of rice, 11,000 sacks of flour and 9,000 sacks of sugar. Noting the country has adequate food supply, Mabrook stated a total of 82 containers, largely made up of food items, were also cleared by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in the past 24 hours. He further said an additional 15,062 kilograms of cargo have also arrived via national airline, Maldivian.

The government has been transporting staples to all the islands in the country. State Trading Organisation (STO) has also announced it has enough supply of staples in the country despite an increasing demand during Ramadan.

NEOC said a total of 27,800 grocery permits have been issued to individuals in efforts to allow households to restock necessities and food items. Moreover, 14,398 permits have also been issued for businesses to provide delivery services during the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region.
