HRCM receives several complaints over dismissals and no-pay leaves

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated it has received various cases over illegal dismissals and unpaid leaves.

A statement issued by HRCM regarding its work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic explained it has received various cases of employers violating employment agreements. The statement noted some resorts have not allowed employees to leave the resorts even after completing the 14-day quarantine period, many have sent staff on no-pay leaves and required staff to take leaves against the employment act. Additionally, crew members have been required to stay on board even after 23 days from the day the last tourist disembarked the safari.

The commission has also received a case over the rift between inmates in Maafushi Prison and staff of Maldives Correctional Services over the changes to procedures following the COVID-19 outbreak. The commission stated the cases are under investigation.

Like many public offices, HRCM has also taken measures to continue its services under special arrangements despite the administration has declared the period a public holiday.
