The government has asked the parliament to cut down USD 1.25 million every month from its monthly expenses.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said the Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has requested to reduce the monthly expenses in efforts to overcome the economic crisis which the country may face during the State of Public Health Emergency. The speaker said the letter sent by the finance minister asked to reduce USD 1,25 million every month. Accepting the request, he said the parliament is capable of fulfilling the request and forwarded the request to Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla to follow up.
The global economic disruption is rising since the COVID-19 global pandemic which broke out late last year. Addressing the nation, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih expressed the economy of Maldives will face significant disruption. The administration stated the contingency budget of USD 13.7 million is allocated to finance the expenses during the State of Public Health Emergency.
