Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has stated all inbound flights from Italy to Maldives are empty flights which have been booked to take Italian tourists back home.
Speaking at a press conference, the tourism minister stated although all direct and transit flights from Italy have been suspended, some empty flights have been arriving to take Italian tourists back home. He said the administration is working with different airlines on transporting Italian tourists who are currently in Maldives.
Flights from Italy were suspended due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the country. Italy has reported over 5,800 cases and over 230 deaths from COVID-19. An estimated 16 million people have been quarantined in Italy.
