President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated women played an essential role in ending an autocratic administration and re-establishing a democratic government in Maldives.
Speaking at the campaign event organised by the Women’s Wing of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih stated women play the most important role in the development of a nation, as seen in the past. In this regard, the president noted the courage and resilience of women, especially from MDP, in ending an autocratic administration and re-establishing democracy in Maldives. He thanked the women of MDP for the exemplary courage shown during all the protests held between 2012 and 2018.
Speaking further, President Solih expressed belief the amendments made to the Decentralisation Act will bear fruits for women empowerment in Maldives, noting the decision to allocate 33% of local council seats to women will help to increase the role of women in the governance of islands and cities. The president added the contribution of women in making important decisions related to the development of islands and cities will significantly increase following the upcoming local council elections.
President Solih also revealed plans to establish child care centres in 3 regions of Maldives to help working women. He said the centres in Male’ City and Addu City are expected to be established before the end of this year.
The president also noted the administration has implemented the policy of granting six-months maternity leave, adding it was an important decision made for the stability and well-being of families. Noting the administration strongly condemns violence against women, the president stated assistance will be provided to victims of abuse under the policies of the administration.
President Solih concluded his speech by thanking all Maldivian women for their contribution to the peace, stability and development of the nation.
