Dependency on oil to produce energy must be reduced: Environment Minister

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated the renewable energy sector must be shaped to enable the dependency on the sector. The environment minister made the remarks at the ceremony held to conclude the Certified Energy Auditor training programme held in Maldives.

At the ceremony, Minister Hussain Rasheed said the changes to climate and the environment are directly connected with the way energy is utilised. Shedding light on the energy sector of Maldives, he said while the highest amount of energy used in Maldives is 280 megawatts, 92.3% is produced by burning oil.

The minister stated it is important to reduce the dependency on oil to produce energy, although the amount of burnt gas released by small countries are relatively low compared to large countries. He added the country must utilise renewable energy resources when seeking to voice out against climate change in the international arena.

Moreover, talking about the programme, the environment minister expressed such training programmes assist the development of the energy sector. He also noted efforts are underway to develop human resources in the sector with the assistance of Maldives Energy Authority.
