Home Minister meets jailed former President Yameen

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has visited former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to clarify his situation in jail.

During the visit to the prison, Minister Imran observed and assessed the general conditions of the facility. He was accompanied by Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu.

The home minister met the former president following his return to the prison after conducting some medical tests in the state-run Indra Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). At an appeal hearing in High Court, the former president complained of psychological trauma and his deteriorating health conditions. He further said the recommended tests are unavailable in Maldives.

High Court decided there is no reason to release the former president on bail until his appeal process is complete. Yameen is serving a 5-year jail sentence after being convicted of money laundering.
