Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed it has received a number of candidacy application forms for the upcoming local council elections.
Speaking to PSM News, Vice President of ECM Ahmed Akram said the commission is currently verifying the application forms. Even though an exact number could not be quoted, Akram said ECM has received a number of forms over the past two days adding over 3,000 forms have been verified thus far. He said ECM will inform applicants of an issue within 48 hours of receiving the application, as required by law.
ECM plans to announce the candidates contesting in the elections after all forms have been verified. Over 6,000 candidates are expected to contest in the local council elections and women's development committee elections to be held on April 4.
The due date of application for women’s development committee elections is February 24.
