President of Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) Mariyam Waheeda has stated she has not been subjected to any political pressure since she took office, adding no influence peddling will be entertained under her leadership.
Speaking to PSM News, Mariyam Waheeda said during her short period in office, she has been working very independently. She also said measures taken and decisions made always adhere to relevant laws and regulations.
The president of BroadCom said the public have lost faith in the institution and broadcasters avoid the commission due to past experiences. She highlighted the commission has always negotiated and collaborated with broadcasters since she took office.
Mariyam Waheeda was summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions after she presented a ceremony held by Ministry of Tourism to announce islands made available for tourism development. She rejected claims her decision to present the ceremony was a bad decision, although stating she will avoid such involvements should the committee instruct. The parliamentary committee decided to include a clause in the Broadcasting Commission Act that prevents commissioners from participating and presenting public events.
Mariyam Waheeda was appointed to BroadCom on December 5, 2019.
