President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated he is confident Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will win a high majority in the local council elections.
Speaking at the event held to inaugurate MDP's campaign posters for the local council elections, President Solih said the people of Maldives gave the party a super-majority in the parliamentary elections last year to bring the necessary changes required to the country. The president said the super-majority in the parliament has brought important legislative changes, including the amendments to the Decentralisation Act which has granted important powers and authorities to local councils and the public. He added electing MDP candidates to local councils will help to bring the development and progress envisioned for the country, as these candidates represent the ideology of the administration.
In his speech, the president expressed confidence the people of Maldives will place their trust in MDP once again in the local council elections and grant a majority similar to the super-majority won in the parliament.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament and President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed noted bringing development to the nation through a decentralised system of governance is one of the most important pledges made by the administration of President Solih. He said only MDP possesses the candidates who can help to turn the pledge to reality.
The event was attended by MDP candidates contesting in the upcoming council elections. The party has decided to contest for all council seats in the elections.
