Police complaint filed against woman who threatened ECM staff

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has filed a police complaint against an individual who allegedly threatened one of its employees while submitting a candidacy form for the local council elections.

Vice President of ECM Ahmed Akram said a woman who had gone to ECM to submit a candidacy form verbally abused and threatened an employee of the commission. Akram said the incident is a matter of grave concern for ECM, noting the commission will not tolerate any threats against its employees. He said a complaint has now been filed at Maldives Police Service (MPS), adding ECM will ensure action is taken against individuals who threaten the safety of its employees.

Application to contest in local council elections and women's development committee elections was opened on February 4. The deadline to submit candidacy forms for local council elections has been set as February 20, while application to contest in women's development committee elections will be open until February 24. Both elections will be held on April 4.

ECM has requested candidates to ensure they submit all the required documents, as specified in the application forms.
