Chair of Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender Jeehaan Mahmood has stated the primary cause for injustice is delayed justice processes by investigative authorities.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, the parliamentarian expressed concern stating analysis of child abuse cases of the past 15 years indicates about 70% of these cases took at least 100 days to investigate. Jeehaan said the victims of sexual and child abuse are on the rise due to injustice, and lack of a proper justice system. She highlighted various hurdles along the way as one tries to get justice for a victim, noting cases are also delayed at Maldives Police Service after they are submitted for investigation.
Parliamentarian Jeehaan further discussed how injustice supports abusers into abusing other children. Jeehaan said some of the cases have been pending for 10 years and indicates the threat posed for children and other victims. She said cases of women and child abusers have been neglected without investigating and providing justice.
Discussing the importance of a stronger investigative system, the parliamentarian said the police and courts must be closely monitored.
