Vehicles procured with the financial support of the Government of India have been handed over to Male’ City Council today.
The vehicles were handed over by the High Commissioner of India to Maldives Sunjay Sudir to the Mayor of Male’ City Sifa Mohamed, in a special ceremony held today. The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and other officials from the government, city council and the High Commission of India in Male’.
USD 517,464 was allocated for Male’ City Council from the grant assistance provided by the Government of India to procure vehicles and machinery needed to ease the pressure, strengthen and increase the capacity of the Council to undertake the responsibilities, carry out more development projects and deliver efficient and timely services to the residents of capital Male’.
Speaking at the event, Foreign Minister Shahid highlighted that the purpose of the cash grant is to facilitate small, but impactful work, thus empowering local communities and driving social development. Mayor Sifa also thanked the Indian Government for the timely support in making the work of the council more effective.
The financial support has been provided from the grant assistance of USD 6.9 million granted to the Government of Maldives by the Government of India during the visit of the Minister of External Affairs of India in March 2019. The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct socio-economic development projects across the country which are of high impact. The projects under this grant will be managed by local authorities.
