Government Oversight Committee begins reviewing Gender Minister nomination

Parliamentary Committee on Government Oversight has begun reviewing the nomination made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the post of Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services.

Following the resignation of Shidhatha Shareef as the gender minister, President Solih nominated Aishath Mohamed Didi who was the Ambassador of Maldives to India. The president made the nomination under Article 129 of the Constitution of Maldives. According to the constitution, the nomination must be reviewed within 7 days and sent to the parliament floor for voting.

Shidhatha Shareef resigned as the gender minister following criticism in handling child abuse cases. Shidhatha submitted her resignation at a time the parliamentary group of the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was preparing to take a no confidence vote against her. She is the first minister who has left the administration which assumed office in November 2018.
