Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has decided to dismiss four members of the Civil Service Commission (CSC). The committee made the decision during a meeting held today.
The four members of CSC facing dismissal are President of the commission Dr. Alee Shameem, Vice President of the commission Shaheed Mohamed and members Zakariyya Hussain and Ibrahim Shaheeq. The committee decided to dismiss these four members citing their role in making decisions that violated constitutional rights of civil servants.
The parliament committee had been investigating CSC members in regard to cases involving unjust dismissal of civil servants, influencing the appointment of permanent secretaries and misappropriations in appointing its staff. The committee had summoned CSC members for the investigation of the allegations against them, with the latest meeting coming on Sunday where three members of the commission were questioned. The president of the commission was also summoned to the committee for questioning last year.
Furthermore, the committee also held a meeting with cabinet ministers to discuss the allegations against CSC members. During the meeting, ministers expressed dissatisfaction over the actions of CSC, stating the commission has become an obstruction in efficiently running the ministries.
Following the meeting today, the committee decided to forward the dismissal motion of four CSC members to the parliament floor.
