Parliament of Maldives has decided to request Maldives Police Services (MPS) to investigate former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu over providing false statements in the case regarding compensating Noomadi Resorts and Residences. The motion was passed with 60 parliamentarians voting in favour following a report compiled by Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts.
Noomadi was contracted to develop housing units in islands during former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan's administration. The contract was later terminated during the presidency of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Noomadi sought compensation from the state after the previous administration terminated the contracts signed with the company to develop housing units in multiple islands. Having initially sought a compensation of USD 155 million, Noomadi later reached a settlement agreement with the administration for USD 55 million.
When summoned to parliament, former Minister Muizzu said the administration had to reach a settlement agreement as officials in the previous and current administration worked towards a compensation plan. Speaking at the committee meeting, parliamentarians claimed the compensation amount will have been significantly lower, had Muizzu not testified against the state. Muizzu gave no response when he was asked whether he testified upon request from the state or Noomadi.
