President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the administration will take swift action against anybody threatening the safety and security of the public. The president made the remarks in a press statement released after convening a meeting of National Security Council (NSC) today in light of the knife-attack that took place in Hulhumale’ two nights ago.
President Solih stated the safety and security of the public remains the highest priority of the administration, adding swift action will be taken against any party threatening or attempting harm on anyone within Maldivian territory. With regard to the incident, the president said a police investigation is underway and three suspects are in custody, noting the victims of the attack are presently under medical care and are recovering. He further stated the administration is closely monitoring the situation, and is working with police to find out more information about the attack, its motives, and the identities of its perpetrators.
In the statement, the president made an appeal to the public, asking them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, additionally underscoring there is no space in Maldives for extremist ideologies. Furthermore, he asked that they rely on trusted government sources for information regarding the incident.
