Elections Commission (ECM) has opened application to contest in the upcoming local council elections.
Speaking at a function held to announce the opening of candidacy applications, Vice President of ECM Ahmed Akram said applications to contest for local councils can be submitted to the commission until February 20. The application form will be available from the reception of ECM as well as its website.
The local council elections will see a total of 982 members elected to city councils, atoll councils and island councils. The upcoming elections will be the first ever to combine two elections, as the election of women’s development committees will be conducted in parallel with the local council elections, in accordance to the amendments brought to the Local Council Election Act. ECM states a total of 930 members will be elected to women’s development committees during the election.
The local council elections, along with the women’s development committee elections, will be held on April 4.
