Ministry of Finance has revealed the Maldives Green Fund received over USD 59.34 million last year.
Maldives Green Fund is a tax collected from tourists to the Maldives to carry environmental projects in the country. The tax, introduced in 2016, is collected from tourists visiting resorts, guest houses, city hotels, safaris. According to the Tourism Act, a tax amount of USD 6 per day shall be collected from tourists visiting the aforementioned tourist facilities.
According to statistics publicised by Ministry of Finance, USD 24 million from the fund has been spent on environmental projects. After financing various projects, the fund now has a total of USD 35.12 million.
As per the statistics, the fund received USD 5.77 million in March last year, which was the highest recorded monthly income. The lowest figure was recorded in the month of July, which was USD 3.3 million.
