The venture supports the aim of the administration to minimise the dependency of oil by increasing the amount of power produced from renewable energy sources to 70%.
The first phase of the project will be conducted in six islands. Under the project, 21 megawatt Grid-tied Solar Photovoltaic Systems will be installed collectively in Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Kulhudhuffushi City, Thinadhoo, Eydhafushi and Hinnavaru.
The project was launched for islands after discussions between environment ministry, island councils, atoll councils and city councils. The environment ministry revealed the surveys required for the project have been concluded.
