Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has published the list of candidates contesting in the party’s primary for the upcoming local council elections.
The list of candidates contesting in MDP’s primary includes a total of 870 candidates. This includes 119 candidates contesting for city councils, 49 candidates contesting for atoll council president and 709 candidates contesting for island councils.
A total of 16 candidates are contesting in the MDP primary for mayoral positions in the city councils. Male’ City Mayor Sifa Mohamed, who is running for another term in office, is the only female candidate contesting for mayor in the primary.
While MDP prepares to conduct its primary on Friday, the party has granted tickets to candidates in constituencies where the number of applicants did not exceed the number of councillors required for the position.
