Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo call for separation from Addu City Council

A petition has been submitted to state authorities calling to separate the wards of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo from Addu City Council.

The petition, which has been signed by several citizens of the two wards, has been submitted to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and members representing the two constituencies in the parliament. It has also been forwarded to the Local Government Authority (LGA) and Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).

The petition states citizens of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo wish to vote for island councils in the upcoming local council elections, instead of a representative member at Addu City Council. The petition added the two wards have been severely neglected in the nine years since Addu City Council was formed, adding the citizens wish to establish island councils in the two wards in order to have the same authorities granted to councils of other islands in the country.

While a petition has been submitted to remove Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo from Addu City Council, ECM has already finalised and announced the constituencies of Addu for the upcoming council elections.
