Action to be taken on judges who delay cases without valid reasoning

Vice President of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Masthoor Husnee has stated action will be taken on judges if cases are being delayed without any valid reasons.

Speaking at the oath taking ceremony of new judges in Criminal Court, Civil Court and Magistrate Courts, Masthoor said important changes were brought to the judiciary last year, which includes making the courts more transparent to the public. He said one of the main issues in courts is the unnecessary delay in processing cases, noting the commission received over 100 complaints regarding delays in court cases.

The vice president of JSC said keeping individuals in remand for years without processing their trials is a major concern, adding action will be taken on judges if their cases are getting delayed without any valid reasons.

Judges who took oath during today’s ceremony include Criminal Court Judge Adam Mohamed, Civil Court Judges Ahmed Abdul Matheen, Fayyaz Shathir, Afza Abdul Ghafoor and Rizmeena as well as Chief Magistrate of Guraidhoo Magistrate Court Fathuhulla Jameel Moosa and Chief Magistrate of Hirilandhoo Magistrate Court Abdulla Hussain. The judges were sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed.
