BroadCom and Home Ministry discuss rebroadcasting issues in islands

Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has held discussions with Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla regarding the rebroadcasting of channels in some islands against regulations.

During the meeting, BroadCom noted channels can only be rebroadcast after acquiring a rebroadcasting license from the commission, stating some islands rebroadcast channels without the license. The commission noted one main obstruction in addressing the issue is the lack of cooperation from island councils in collecting information of such cases.

BroadCom stated the case therefore drags unnecessarily for months and information is not received as the services are provided by people close to the councils. The commission requsted Minster Imran to work with Maldives Police Service (MPS) to solve the issue. In response, the home minister stated efforts will be exerted to work towards a solution after the findings of the meeting.

While discussions were held with the home minister, the commission also held discussions with Ministry of Tourism regarding channels being rebroadcast in resorts and guest houses.
