JSC discusses ways to speed up cases involving sexual abuse of minors

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has held discussions on speeding up the court cases related to sexual abuse of minors.

JSC announced discussions were held regarding the matter during a meeting held by the commission last night. JSC said the commission met with chief judges of different courts to identify the reasons behind the delays in processing the cases and actions that can be taken to speed up the process. The commission said a decision was made to take the necessary actions by the end of this week.

In addition, JSC has also decided to request Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) to organise a block trials system for cases involving sexual abuse of minors. The commission said such a system would reduce delays in processing the cases.

JSC began efforts to speed up sexual abuse cases following public outrage over the rape and abuse of a toddler in a southern island of Maldives. The father, grandfather and great-grandfather of the victim have been brought into police custody.
