Case clearance rate of judiciary increases in 2019

Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) has revealed that the number of cases completed by Maldivian courts increased in 2019, compared to the previous year.

According to statistics published by DJA, the number of completed cases by top and superior courts exceeded the number of new cases submitted in 2019. A case clearance rate of 103.5% was recorded in 2019, which was an 8.6% increase compared to 2018.

DJA revealed a total of 10,361 cases were submitted to top and superior courts last year. Along with 5,682 cases that had been carried forward from 2018, hearings of 16,223 cases were conducted in 2019, of which 10,724 cases were completed.

Meanwhile, 10,624 new cases were submitted to magistrate courts last year. Along with 4,284 cases carried forward from 2018, hearings of 14,908 cases were conducted last year, of which 10,634 cases were completed. The case clearance rate of magistrate courts stood at 100.1%, which is an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous year.

Combining the statistics of top and superior courts with the statistics of magistrate courts, a case clearance rate of 101.8% was recorded last year. This is an improvement of 4.5% compared to 2018.

DJA says the administration targets to ensure the efficiency of the judiciary is maintained at a high rate this year.
