Upgraded wage structure of councillors sent to parliament for review: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the upgraded wage structure of councillors has been submitted to the Parliament of Maldives for review.

Speaking at a conference held in Kulhudhuffushi City, as part of the campaign by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih said the administration will not discriminate among councils, adding all cities and islands will be administered under the decentralisation system without any room for discrimination. In this regard, the president said the upgraded wage structure has been set without differentiating between councils, noting the wages of all city councillors have been set at the same level regardless of the city they are representing. He also revealed the wages have been set for all island councillors at the same level, with no difference among any islands.

The wage structure of councillors, as revealed by the president, is as follows:

  • Mayors - USD 2,589
  • Deputy mayors – USD 2,265
  • City council members – USD 1,941
  • Presidents of atoll councils – USD 1,812
  • Presidents of island councils – USD 1,489
  • Members of atoll/island councils – USD 776

President Solih said the upgraded wage structure set by the administration has now been submitted to the parliament for review.

The conference held by MDP in Kulhudhuffushi was aimed at raising the awareness of councillors and candidates contesting in the upcoming local council elections on the amendments brought to the Decentralisation Act. In addition to President Solih, several senior officials of MDP took part in the conference.
