The main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has publicised the candidates’ list for the party’s primary held ahead of the upcoming local council elections.
Deputy chair of the party’s electoral committee Ibrahim Muizzu said the publicised candidates’ list is still likely to have some errors, adding the committee is working on correcting the list.
MDP will be holding its primary on January 31. The party says a total of 1,328 candidates will contest in the primary, with 1,067 candidates contesting for island councils, 153 candidates contesting for atoll councils and 108 candidates contesting for city councils. The city council candidates include 13 candidates who are contesting for the position of mayor.
While MDP publicised the candidates’ list for its primary, the party has launched its official campaign for the local council elections. The party is currently conducting a mass campaign event in the northern atolls.
