Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated traffic regulations need to be revised in order to resolve the traffic issues in the country.
Tweeting the statistics on road traffic violations dealt by the traffic police in 2019, Commissioner Hameed said a great amount of time is involved in enforcing traffic regulations which need to be changed as well. The commissioner said meetings will be held with all stakeholders next week to reach a solution that would ease the burden of enforcing the traffic regulations.
The statistics shared by the commissioner revealed that 36,963 traffic violation stickers were issued last year, while 2840 vehicles were towed. Over 12,000 cases of driving without a valid licence were recorded by the police during 2019.
The police had also recorded 118 cases of driving without a helmet on the Sinamale’ bridge and highway, 1,219 cases of violating the helmet regulations and 2,124 cases of speeding.
