Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology has said the E-Council system will be accessible to 70% of the population of Maldives by the end of this year.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister of State for Communication, Science and Technology Ali Solih said the ministry has conducted several projects within the last one year to virtually connect the country. He noted the councils have been connected through the National Compute Network, adding the fiber connection of the network in Male’ City has been completed while the connection in Hulhumale’ is expected to be completed this year.
Meanwhile, Head of National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) Ahmed Haleem shared the details of the progress being made on the E-Council system, which was developed to digitise and store important documents of local councils. Haleem said the ministry and NCIT has been working to train council staff on the E-Council system, adding the ministry targets to roll out the system to 70% of the Maldivian population this year. He said efforts are underway to prepare video tutorials in order to provide a sustainable method of training.
In addition to providing access to the E-Council system, Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology is also currently working on developing a digital identification card for all Maldivian citizens.
