Male' City Council has said efforts are underway to establish parking buildings in the city.
Speaking to PSM News, member of Male' City Council Hussain Zameer said the parking difficulties in Male' needs to be addressed immediately. However, Zameer said resolving the issue will take time as there is no quick-fix to the issue. He said the newly designated parking areas will be used until a permanent solution can be brought.
Councillor Zameer revealed the city council is set to conduct discussions with Ministry of Islamic Affairs on vacating the 4 cemeteries in the city and constructing parking buildings in these plots. He said the parking buildings will be constructed in the cemetery plots if there are no issues from Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The councillor said the policy of the administration is to reduce the number of vehicles from the streets of Male' and to make the city more pleasant for pedestrians. He said the administration targets to introduce intra-city public transport and control the number of vehicles in the city within a certain limit, adding the permanent solution for congestion will be visible by the end of the current five-year term of the administration.
While the city council announced efforts are underway to establish parking buildings, there have been several complaints on how the newly designated parking areas have been designed. Several people have complained the areas are not suitable for a city with such limited land available.
