Maldives Police Services (MPS) has stated it is investigating a case filed against former Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on the accusation of providing false information to the Presidential Commission on Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances (DDCom) regarding the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
A spokesperson from MPS said the case is currently under investigation and declined to provide further information on the case.
The report by DDCom accused Shaheem of providing false information to the commission regarding the murder of Afrasheem and obstructing the investigation. Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) rejected the initial investigations and sent back the report for further investigations, following consultations with DDCom.
In a tweet, Shaheem said PGO rejecting the initial findings shows DDCom made a politically motivated accusation. He also called for an investigation against members due to the approach adopted by the commission.
While Shaheem's case is under investigation, PGO also counselled to reinvestigate the case of Mohamed Mazeed and Samith Mohamed as the evidence against them is deemed insufficient.
Afrasheem was brutally murdered at his residence in the early morning of October 2, 2012.
