USD 25.8 million spent for incarceration and rehabilitation of inmates in 2019

Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has stated more than USD 25.8 million was spent on incarceration and rehabilitation of inmates in 2019.

Speaking during the graduation of the police recruit training course held at Vaanee Police Academy, the finance minister stated more than 13,000 criminal cases were submitted for police investigation last year and the loss incurred thereof reach over USD 6.4 million. He noted the police are under obligation to stop organised crime which hinders economic development of the country.

Speaking during the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said the aim of the police is to ensure human rights needed for a democratic environment and maintain stability in the society. He also stated the five-year strategic action plan will achieve the desired aims for the force, adding efforts are underway to enhance the democratic accountability on police personnel.

The participants of the police recruit training course included 20 women and 99 men, with 91 participants graduating. The course conducted by the police academy aims to train Maldivians to work in the police force in accordance with the law. The graduates would be granted opportunity to work as field attachment trainees for a probation period of six months at various departments of the Maldives Police Service.
