MCS gave false information on prison unrest: HRCM

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) passed false information to the investigative team of HRCM, which was tasked to probe in to the unrest in the prisons.

HRCM has launched a special probe to investigate the reasons behind the unrest in the prisons. However, the commission said it has not received suitable cooperation from MCS in its attempt to investigate the discord.

An investigative team from HRCM met inmates and prison officers, and inquired about the issues faced in the prisons. The team has also observed the situation and the facilities established in the prisons.

HRCM said its investigative team has found the unrest began after basic needs of the inmates were not met, including delayed healthcare. Citing the preliminary findings, HRCM said inmates in Male' Prison went on a hunger strike, adding 3 locations of the facilities were set on fire.

Following complaints, National Integrity Commission (NIC) has also visited some of the prisons to investigate causes of discord and disobedience.
