No membership increase in two biggest political parties

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed that the two biggest political parties in Maldives have not had a membership increase by the end of 2019.

The main ruling party of Maldives, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has 54, 101 members with a reduction of 201 members from May 2019.

The main opposition party Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) had a total of 38,023 registered members in mid-2019 while the number has fallen to 36,073 by the end of the year, which is a decrease of 1,947 members.

The third biggest party is Jumhooree Party (JP) with 11,072 members, with an increase of 1,737 members from May 2019.

The statistics reveal that only MDP, PPM and JP have a membership of over 10,000.

The list of registered members in parties by December 2019:

  • Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) - 54,101 members
  • Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) - 36,073 members
  • Jumhooree Party (JP) - 11,072 members
  • Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) - 8,506 members
  • Adhaalath Party (AP) - 6,789 members
  • People's National Congress (PNC) - 4,221 members
  • Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) - 3,279 members
  • Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) - 3,033 members
  • Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) - 2,977 members
  • Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) - 2,851 Members


ECM states 1,167 forms from JP, 232 forms from PPM and 323 forms from MRM have not yet been processed.

As per the statistics, the highest membership increase has been found in JP. Once the pending applications are all approved, JP will have more than 12,000 members.

According to Political Parties Act, budget allocated to political parties will only be shared with political parties which have more than 10,000 registered members.
