Male’ City Streetscaping Project to begin this month

Male’ City Council has stated its streetscaping project, aimed at improving the standard of the streets of the capital city, will begin this month.

Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Mayor of Male' City Shamau Shareef said the council held discussions with several authorities and institutions in their attempt to resolve the problems faced due to the poor standard of streets in the city. He said the design of the streetscaping project was based on the feedback obtained during these discussions.

The deputy mayor said the practical work of the project will begin this month, starting with the western area of the city. Shamau said the project will be distributed into four main phases, carried out over 3 years. He said the project includes restructuring the streets of Male' City, with the installation of fire hydrant systems on the streets as well as more convenient sidewalks and more plantation.

Shamau said the project will help to bring an end to the difficulties caused by frequent excavations and dewatering pipes. He said the expenses for the project are covered by the revenue generated by the council under the new amendments to the Decentralisation Act.

Development on upgrading the streets of Male' City had been carried out under the previous administration, with Majeedhee Magu being re-developed with new drainage systems and fire hydrant systems. However, the re-development failed to resolve the flooding problem in the capital city.
