Adeeb to remain in detention despite completion of sentence

Attorney of Ahmed Adeeb has revealed the former vice president will not be free although his prison sentence of 3 months and 18 days over fleeing to India came to an end on January 3.

Speaking to PSM News, Adeeb's lawyer Mahfooz Saeed said the former vice president will not be free due to other prosecutions against him by the Criminal Court of Maldives which he starts serving immediately. Adeeb was sentenced to be detained until the end of investigations over corruption charges against him.

Adeeb fled to India in a tugboat on July 27, 2019 claiming he was trying to seek asylum. Although Adeeb was sentenced to jail, he served his sentence under house arrest due to poor health conditions.

Earlier, the former vice president was sentenced to 33 years in jail over the blasts on the presidential speedboat in 2015. The sentence was later overturned by the High Court and the Supreme Court.

The state has also raised charges against Adeeb regarding the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). Former President Abdula Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been sentenced to 5 years in prison by the Criminal Court over the money laundering charges pressed by the state against him in relation to the scandal.
