Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has announced it is seeking an additional 2 hectares of land to resolve the current setback it has in managing waste due to lack of space. The announcement was made at a time WAMCO is experiencing issues in managing its main waste disposal centre in Thilafushi is currently in its maximum capacity.
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director of WAMCO Adam Mohamed said Thilafushi Port development project has caused challenges in managing waste. Adam Mohamed said bad weather and lack of space in docking barges attribute to loss for WAMCO. He further revealed WAMCO is currently unable to dispose 21 million tonnes of waste it has in the waste disposal centre in Thilafushi. He added WAMCO is currently seeking to acquire the 2-hectare lagoon next to the centre.
WAMCO had highlighted its efforts to manage waste better by producing electricity from waste management. WAMCO expects to produce 7 megawatts of electricity from the waste in Thilafushi.
