PGO returns DDCOM cases for further investigations

Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has rejected cases forwarded by the Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances (DDCom) on individuals to be charged with the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, journalist Ahmed Rilwan and blogger Yameen Rasheed.

DDCom decided to charge Mohamed Mazeed and Samith Mohamed over the murders, while the former Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed was charged with obstructing justice by providing false information during the investigation related to the murder of Afrasheem. The cases forwarded were rejected and returned as the investigations were inadequate, according to PGO.

The presidential commission's report following the probe into the murder of Afrasheem and Rilwan revealed Mazeed and Samith spread extremist ideologies and are in charge of running the Al-Qaeda branch in Maldives.

The commission concluded extremist ideologies were behind all three murders which took place separately between 2012 and 2017.
