Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has revealed it is an aim of the administration to explore new opportunities around the world for Maldives and its nationals, and seek to maximise the benefits from such opportunities. He made the remarks in his message commemorating New Year 2020.
In his message, Foreign Minister Shahid said Maldives approaches the New Year with full of hope, and the promise of new possibilities, adding 2020 will be historic for the country as it will mark 55 years of independence and 55 years since the implementation of an independent foreign policy. He said Maldives approached the milestone with a renewed sense of purpose and a new determination to further promote Maldivian interests in the global arena.
The foreign minister highlighted Maldives had made remarkable strides throughout the world during the first year of the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Shahid noted Maldives abandoned the policy of self-imposed isolationism, and re-established partnerships with traditional friends, while forging new friendships. He said as a result, Maldives has reclaimed its rightful place in global politics and regained the trust and respect of its friends and partners.
Elaborating on the plans for 2020, Minister Shahid expressed Maldives will strengthen diplomatic efforts in protecting and promoting independence, strive to make the nation a leader in advocating and advancing the interests, the hopes and dreams of the other Small Islands Developing States in global politics. The minister said Maldives will further strengthen the consular services rendered to fellow Maldivians travelling and residing overseas, renew commitment in protecting and promoting the principles of democracy and human rights. He also added Maldives will strengthen the capacities of the members of the Maldives Foreign Service with the skills and professionalism that will make every Maldivian proud.
The foreign minister concluded his message praying for a prosperous year for all Maldivians and wishing a Happy New Year.
