President of Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) Ahmed Karam reveals the occupancy of guesthouses is at 95 percent in the peak season of tourism.
Speaking to PSM News, Karam stated the guesthouses are on high demand every year, adding the demand is higher in central Maldives. While the administration disbursed loans worth over USD 6.2 million this year, the main contribution as loans was made to the guesthouse sector. In this regard, over USD 5.6 million were given for guesthouse businesses.
Meanwhile, the administration prioritises developing local tourism in the islands to directly benefit the citizens from the sector.
During the first year of the administration, 90 new guesthouses were opened for business.
