Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has expressed confidence that Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has the capability to improve the tourism sector of Maldives.
In a tweet at a time Minister Ali Waheed has faced heavy criticism over comments made over service charge given by resorts for employees, Speaker Nasheed highlighted the minister was a former chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and that he would be familiar with the principles of the party. Nasheed noted the tourism industry has seen improvements in the past one year, adding he has the full confidence Minister Ali Waheed can overcome issues regarding minimum wage and service charge in the tourism sector.
Citing survey conducted and statistics gathered by Ministry of Tourism, Minister Ali Waheed had said most resorts hand out service charge in accordance with the policies. His comment was faced by heavy criticism from the public.
