Overcrowding in prisons will be solved temporarily: MCS

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has stated a temporary solution to the overcrowding in prisons will be found in the next two days.

Speaking to media, an officer of MCS said the prisons were occupied with more than it can accommodate when the current administration took office adding the current issue is overcrowding of remand prison. Noting the biggest issue faced is lack of effort exerted in the past five years to increase the prison space, the officer revealed major efforts are launched by the current administration to maintain the standards of the prisons.

Several medias reported the overcrowding issue in prisons, as some inmates held at Dhoonidhoo Prison were transferred to the custody of correctional service due to lack of space. 58 inmates who should be held under the custody of correctional service is being held under its custody, according to Maldives Police Service. The police service noted 50 of the inmates must be serving their sentences while remaining 8 are those awaiting remand.

The reports come at a time when the government has already launched initiation to standardise the prions as required in the Mandela Standard.
