Maldives Police Service has revealed the murderer attempted to mug the murdered taxi driver Hassan Qasim at knife-point and he was killed as he attempted to scream and exit the taxi.
Speaking to media to brief on the murder of the 59-year-old taxi driver, Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau said Qasim was murdered by 21-year-old Adhuham Mohamed of Boduhiyaage, Hinnavaru in Lhaviyani Atoll. He was identified as the sole offender and he has shared details of the attack upon arrest, he said.
Police apprehended him based on forensic evidence. Adhuham has admitted to his crime, explaining Qasim was stabbed in the neck after he resisted the money demanded by Adhuham and was stabbed as Qasim Hassan attempted to scream and exit the taxi. Qasim was stabbed in the neck to stop him from screaming and escaping, according to the police.
Furthermore, police service revealed the shirt and trouser the murderer wore on the night of December 4, when he committed the murder has also been recovered adding it was hidden at a site in the vicinity of the crime scene. The police also found the murder weapon which is a knife from the area. Footage of 67 cameras and 193 CCTV footage were analysed for the investigation which in terms of time is 1270 hours and 15 minutes, stated the police.
Maldives Police Service said although the murderer confessed to the crime, the investigators will not only depend on the confession but rather investigate further.
