Economic ministry concludes research on minimum wage

Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has revealed the ministry has concluded its preliminary research on setting the minimum wage in the Maldives.

Speaking at the reception to mark the centenary of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Minister Fayyaz said the administration expects to set a minimum pay accepted by employer and employee. Stating that setting the minimum wage is an important pledge of the current administration, the minister highlighted the discussions Maldives had with ILO, and Salaries and Advisory Board of the Maldives.

Further, the minister remarked the research ministry began has been completed adding that the conclusions of the report have been submitted to him. Minister Fayyaz said the government expects to set an agreeable minimum wage and, in this regard, the bill will be submitted to the parliament after counseling with the cabinet members. He expected the bill to be completed in the first session of the parliament next year.

Highlighting on the importance of minimum wage to the Maldives, he said the economic activities are expected to change with the introduction since all work will be deemed decent. The minister expects changes to the salaries and wages, and set standards in work environments to better work and work conditions.
