The government has issued a plot of land to UAE to establish their Embassy in the diplomatic enclave in Hulhumale' phase 2. At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Abdulla Shahid handed over the written confirmation of the allocation to Ambassador-Designate of the UAE to the Maldives Dr. Saeed Mohammed Ali Al Shamsi.
The foreign ministry has allocated a diplomatic enclave at Hulhumale Phase 2 for diplomatic missions in the Maldives to easily guarantee safety and security of foreign missions by limiting locations of the missions to one area in accordance with international standards and practices. Hulhumale’ was selected for the enclave as Male’ city is already congested and Male’ cannot accommodate the addition of embassies, stated ministry.
The allocation will also ease the difficulty of parking experienced by the missions in Male’. The ministry also added that the lands have been granted to foreign missions on the basis of reciprocity.
Plots of land have already been granted to embassies of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China while the Embassy of India has laid the foundation of the Embassy Building.
