Administration to formulate authority to provide better public service

Parliamentarian Abdulla Saneef has submitted a bill to the parliament seeking to create an authority called Utility Regulatory Authority to deliver better public service. The purpose of the bill is to formulate an authority to plan, standardise and regulate the providence of utilities in the country, said Saneef.

The regulatory body will also take action against the people who violate the bill. Once the bill is passed by the parliament, the government must formulate a regulatory authority which will be accountable to the parliament. The bill requires the president to elect 5-members to the board and utility companies must attain a license to provide utility services. The regulatory authority is mandated with ensuring affordable, accessible, trustworthy and sustainable utility service to the public.

Moreover, the authority also ensures a quality service apart from making sure the price is fair and just. The bill further requires the utility providers to adhere to pricing standards set by the authority.

While the first reading of the bill has been presented in the parliament, once passed, the utility companies must adhere to standards set by the regulatory authority.
